What Is a 5 Pin Magnetic Charging Cable?
Magnets guide automatic alignment while pogo pin contacts establish the electrical paths. Five contacts allow power to be combined with additional signals where the circuit requires them.
pogo pin contactsThe full system includes the magnetic head, cable conductors, termination such as USB, and the matching device-side connector.
Five identifies the number of available contacts. It does not define a standard wiring scheme; the device circuit determines each contact function.
How Should the 5 Pins Be Assigned?
The contacts can serve power, ground and additional signals or identification. Follow the device schematic and approved wiring drawing when defining the final map.

Compatibility Checklist
Compare the cable with the device drawing before approving samples. Check:
Pin pitch & map
Connector geometry
Voltage / current
Electrical & magnetic polarity
Working compression
Mating direction

90° vs 180° 5 Pin Magnetic Cable
Select outlet direction from the clearance around the mating interface and the cable route permitted by the enclosure.
| Item | 90° Cable | 180° Cable |
|---|---|---|
| Cable exit | Side | Straight |
| Rear clearance | Lower | More |
| Routing | Along housing | Direct backward |
| Typical layout | Thin enclosure / dock | Open rear space |
| Selection basis | Housing constraint | Straight cable path |

Choose the Cable End for Your Device
The cable end can be specified to match the power source or internal assembly method.
A
USB-A
For common USB sources, adapters and consumer charging docks.
C
USB-C
For a USB-C power connection. USB PD and other fast-charging capabilities require the corresponding circuit and wiring.
Bare Wire / Terminal
For direct PCB connections, internal harnesses and custom dock assembly.
Custom Connector
Specify a mating connector for an existing harness or proprietary internal interface.
Also define cable length, AWG conductor size, outer diameter, jacket material and strain-relief geometry.

Custom 5 Pin Magnetic Charging Cable for Your Device
An OEM project may already have fixed housing dimensions, PCBA position, charging-port location, wall thickness and internal cable routing.
A standard cable can conflict with those choices through pitch mismatch, reversed magnetic polarity, cable interference or an unsuitable head. Magtor can adapt the following assembly details:
Connector dimensions
Pin map definition
Cable length & wire gauge
Cable OD
90° / 180° outlet
USB-A / USB-C / bare wire
Magnetic polarity & force
Custom overmolding

What Should You Confirm Before Ordering?
Provide these parameters to review the five-contact cable against the device interface.
| Parameter | Why It Matters | What to Provide |
|---|---|---|
| Pin map & Pitch | Define contact alignment and the power, data or ID functions. | Circuit diagram / spacing |
| Voltage & Current | Select internal contact structure and conductor gauge. | Max V/A requirements |
| Polarity (Electrical & Magnetic) | Check electrical polarity and N/S orientation to address incorrect mating and short-circuit risk. | Device-side specification |
| Outlet Direction | Plan rear clearance and 90° or 180° routing. | Housing 2D/3D drawing |
| Cable Specs | Specify cable length, gauge, diameter and the USB-A, USB-C or bare-wire termination. | Length / AWG / End type |
| Mechanical Data | Review retention, compression and mating cycles for the required service life. | Confirm based on project requirements. |

Applications for 5 Pin Magnetic Charging Cables
A five-contact interface can be developed for the power and signal requirements of different OEM devices.

Smart Wearables
Use case: a small housing needs charging and device detection. Structure: a low-profile five-contact head and flexible cable.

Medical Electronics
Use case: frequent connection, cleaning and external-cable replacement. Structure: a flat mating surface with specified magnetic retention.

Charging Docks
Use case: a fixed-position dock connects without visual alignment. Structure: bare-wire or terminal ends integrated inside the dock.

Handheld Electronics
Use case: a handheld device needs power with signal or ID verification. Structure: a straight 180° cable with USB-A or USB-C ends.

IoT / Smart Devices
Use case: a compact smart-device enclosure needs a maintenance connection. Structure: a 90° side outlet to save internal space.

Industrial Equipment
Use case: industrial power and control signals need a defined route. Structure: project-specific conductor size and reinforced overmolding.

5 Pin vs 4 Pin Magnetic Charging Cable
Let the required circuit functions determine whether four or five contacts are appropriate.
| Feature | 5 Pin Cable | 4 Pin Cable |
|---|---|---|
| Number of contacts | 5 | 4 |
| Typical charging function | Power + Ground | Power + Ground |
| Additional signal flexibility | Up to 3 extra contacts | Up to 2 extra contacts |
| ID / Detection | High flexibility for ID/Control | Limited flexibility |
| Connector size | Slightly wider (pitch dependent) | More compact |

Four contacts may be enough for power and a small number of signals. Five provide one more path for ID, detection or control. Review the related 4-Pin Magnetic Charging Cable options.

A working pilot sample must be followed by production consistency checks. Magtor compares the cable assembly with its approved drawing, including:
Cable continuity (Open/Short)
Correct wire sequence
Contact resistance
Spring & magnetic force
Dimensional inspection
Plating inspection
Mating-cycle testing
Salt spray (where required)
Production checks track contact sequence, magnetic polarity, cable length, outlet direction and head orientation.
